RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Levi Cabral ripped a match-high 17 kills to lead California Baptist University in its first sweep of the year as the Lancers downed Princeton, 3-0 (30-16, 30-23, 30-21).
Adiel Tiedjop's streak of 16 straight matches with double figure kills came to and end as he and Mike MacNeill combined for 17 kills with Tiedjop notching nine while MacNeill had eight. Both Lancers also served up three aces and posted two blocks. MacNeill also tied Micah Tokuda for a match-high five digs.
Blair Penner served a match-high five aces for the second straight match and continued his streak of serving at least one ace in every match this year. Penner also dished out 39 assists. Garet Kreutziger had a team-high three blocks.
CBU held Princeton to an opponent season low .099 hitting percentage and didn't allow more than 30 kills for the first time this year. As a team, CBU hit just .284 (42-19-81) but managed to hit .344 in the first set and .346 in the third. CBU also out blocked (9-7) and out dug (25-16) Princeton and allowed just one ace compared to serving a season-high 13 aces in the match.
Penner had all five of his aces in the first set alone, three of which came in a 7-0 run to open the match. Cabral also had eight kills, half of the team's kills in the set. The Lancers took their biggest lead of the set at 25-11 on a 7-3 run that included three kills from Cabral and a pair of kills from MacNeill. Cabral also scored two of the Lancers' final three points of the set.
CBU trailed 7-4 in the second set, but a 9-4 run capped by a Cabral kill gave CBU the lead for good at 13-11. The Lancers then used a 10-5 run to take a 23-16 lead and eventually took their biggest lead of the set at 27-19 on a Cabral block. The Tigers tried to answer with consecutive points, but a pair of kills from Adam Church and MacNeill, and a Princeton error, sealed the set and gave CBU a 2-0 match lead.
The Lancers battled from behind again early in the third, but used an 8-2 run, including a pair of kills from Tiedjop to jump out to a 13-9 advantage. CBU slowly pulled away down the stretch and closed out the match with a MacNeill ace.
The Lancers will now hit the longest road stretch of the year. After traveling to UCLA, Wednesday, CBU will head out to St. Louis, Mo. to take on Missouri Baptist, Feb. 5, and then will play in the Lindenwood tournament Feb. 6-7.
