LOS ANGELES ? California Baptist University got off to a hot start in stealing the opening set away from No. 8 UCLA, but dropped the next three sets in a 3-1 (32-34, 30-17, 30-23, 30-25) loss to the Bruins.
The Lancers (4-4) trailed 20-19 in the opening set before using a 7-1 run to climb out to a 26-21 lead and held two set points with a 29-27 lead, but the Bruins worked their way back to tie it at 29. CBU had four straight set points before Adiel Tiedjop put it away with his fourth ace of the set to take it at 34-32. The Lancers got 16 kills, eight each, from Tiedjop and Levi Cabral in the opening set, but that was the only set the Lancers won as the Bruins rolled through the final three sets.
Tiedjop led the way with a career-high six aces and a team-high 20 kills. Cabral was the only other Lancer in double figure kills with 18. Blair Penner dished out 46 assists and served one ace to move his consecutive matches with an ace to seven.
Micah Tokuda posted a team-high 11 digs while Penner and Mike MacNeill each had five. Adam Church also notched four blocks.
CBU opened the match with a .333 hitting percentage in the opening set, but hit -.125 and .083 in the following sets before closing out the match with a .308 in the final set. UCLA on the other hand had only one set that it hit under .400 and that was a .308 in the first. The Bruins hit .455, .444 and .481 in the final three sets.
The Bruins also out blocked (14.5-6.5) and out dug (45-31) the Lancers.
This was the first of seven straight road games for CBU.
