RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? California Baptist University needed just six sets to down NCAA Division III No. 5 UC Santa Cruz and Holy Names.
The Lancers (13-5) didn't waste much time with a 3-0 (30-28, 30-16, 30-28) win over the Banana Slugs and even less time in a 3-0 (30-22, 30-18, 30-23) win over the Hawks.
Adiel Tiedjop led the way with 16 kills and eight digs while hitting .387. Levi Cabral ripped 12 kills and posted three blocks.
The Lancers hit over .300 in the first two sets with a .333 (11-3-24) in the first and a .481 (15-2-27) in the second. CBU recorded 13 blocks with Adam Church leading the way with six.
CBU trailed 11-7 in the first set before going on a 13-5 run, including three aces. UCSC cut it within one on five occasions before tying the match at 26. A service error gave CBU a 27-26 lead before Justin Lam tied at 27 with a kill. Another service error and a Scott Markley ace gave the Lancers set point at 29-27. After a Markley service error, CBU took advantage of a UCSC attack error to take the first set.
CBU trailed a handful of times early in the second set, but broke a 6-6 tie on a Cabral kill and then outscored the Banana Slugs 23-10 through the rest of the set. In the final set, CBU broke a 17-17 tie with a 5-1 run that was capped by consecutive Cabral aces, but UCSC eventually closed the gap to one late at 29-28. Despite the late run, the Banana Slugs ended the match with a service error.
In the matinee sweep over the Hawks, the Lancers used a balanced attack as 12 different players registered a kill. Christian Cannon led the way with a team-high nine kills. Markley and Cabral both added six kills apiece. Brandon Barna finished with five.
The Lancers hit .281 (42-17-89) as a team and had 26 digs, nine aces and four team blocks. The Hawks committed 24 attack errors and hit just .049.
CBU scored the first three points of the match and never trailed in the opening set. It led 11-9 when Cabral had two of his six opening-set kills to spur the Lancers to four straight points and a 15-9 advantage. CBU led 22-18 and used a 5-0 flurry, keyed by three straight Hawk attack errors, to open a 27-19 lead.
The second set was tied at 2-2 when the Hawks again committed three straight attack errors to help the Lancers jump out to a 7-2 lead. Markley then had a pair of kills and back-to-back Hawk errors helped the Lancers forge a 14-5 advantage. Evan Frawley and Cannon then had consecutive kills as the Lancers opened a 20-9 lead. The teams traded points the rest of the way as the Lancers never led by less than nine.
Like they did in the first set, the Lancers scored the first three points of the final set and never trailed. Markley had back-to-back aces to push the Lancers to a 9-3 advantage. Three straight Hawk attack errors made it 20-10, and the Lancers cruised in from there as Cannon put the finishing touches on the match with a kill at match-point.
Markley, Adam Cook and Mike MacNeill all finished with five digs. Markley completed a fine all-around game with a match-high three of the Lancers' nine aces. Tyler Krieger had a match-high 25 assists in two sets.
The Hawks' Jeff Wolf led all players with 11 kills.
