RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Fresno Pacific scored two late second-half goals just six minutes apart to sneak out of Riverside with a 2-0 win over California Baptist University Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops the Lancers to 1-5-4 overall, 0-4-1 (1 point) GSAC and extends their goal-scoring drought to six straight games. The win snaps the Sunbirds' three-game losing skid as they improve to 5-4-1, 1-2-1 (4 points) and extend their unbeaten streak against CBU to eight straight.
In a very slow-paced game where the teams combined for just 18 shots and no real dangerous chances until the final 20 minutes, it was the Sunbirds who finally broke through. Paul Islas dumped a ball into the box and when it arrived to Rodrigo Vianna, Lancer defender Tyler Mitchell slipped. Vianna easily beat Jeff Redinger to the far post for a 1-0 FPU lead in the 70th minute.
Then just 6:10 later, the Sunbirds countered and Islas found himself streaking down the middle of the field. When a Lancer defender stepped to challenge, Islas fed Vitor Machado on the right side. Machado tucked away the insurance goal to put the game away.
“That was a pretty unintelligent performance on our part,” said CBU Head Coach Ryan Jorden. “We played right to their strengths. We were prepared. We just didn't perform the way we prepared.”
The Lancers actually out-shot the Sunbirds, 10-8, including a 7-4 margin in the second half. However, only two of the Lancers' 10 shots were on target.
