RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University swept its third straight Golden State Athletic Conference series with a 3-2 (25-16, 19-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-12) win over No. 14 Point Loma Nazarene.
The No. 2-ranked Lancers (21-2, 11-2 GSAC) got a match-high 19 kills from Fei Shi who also had 12 digs for her 12th double-double of the season. Ingrid Carmona and Noelle Dyk combined for 20 kills with each notching 10. Krista Hasemeyer and Danielle Sargant matched each other in assists with both dishing out 25. Sargant also had 10 digs, notching her fourth double-double of the season.
Kari Oliver and Katie Lockard along with Bree Rauschenbach got the Lancer defense going as both Oliver and Lockard posted a match-high 14 digs. Rauschenbach tied a career-high with seven blocks to go with her eight kills. Melinda Adelin also recorded a career-high five blocks.
CBU is now 3-2 in five-set matches this season after losing their last two that went the distance. It was the Lancersí first five-set win in conference play this season.
The Lancers came out firing in the opening set, jumping out to an 11-3 lead. Shi had three of the five kills in that run. The Sea Lions cut it to 12-6, but that was as close as they came. CBU held its biggest lead of 11 three times with the last coming at set point at 24-13. Point Loma tried to mount a late rally, scoring three straight to make it 24-16, but Carmona ripped her fifth kill of the set to put it away.
Again the Lancers got out quickly in the second set, leading 5-1, but the Sea Lions answered with a 9-3 run to take a 10-8 lead. After three ties, Point Loma broke a 14-14 tie with a 5-0 run to lead 19-14 and didnít trail from there. CBU cut it to three twice, but could never recover.
CBU never trailed in the third set, but never led by more than four until the final point. The Lancers took their biggest lead of the set with a 5-2 run to lead 12-8. Point Loma turned the tables and eventually tied the set at 16, but CBU responded with three straight points, including a kill each from Adelin and Shi. The Sea Lions scored two straight before a Dyk kill gave CBU a 20-18 lead, but Point Loma scored two more to tie it at 20. Dyk began to put on the finishing touches with consecutive kills before a Sea Lion error and a Hasemeyer ace gave set point to the Lancers. It was Dyk again who had the hot hand, scoring the fifth straight point for the Lancers to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Lancers trailed 3-1 in the fourth set, but rallied with a 6-1 run to lead 7-4. Point Loma answered right back, scoring four in a row to retake the lead at 8-7. Leading 10-9, the Sea Lions used a 4-1 run to take just a big enough lead, at 14-10, and kept CBU at bay the rest of the set to tie the match at 2-2.
After three straight ties to start to the final set, the Lancers broke a 3-3 tie with three consecutive points. A Carmona kill and two Sea Lion errors gave the Lancers a 6-3 lead. Point Loma cut the deficit to 6-4, but CBU again started to run away with a 4-1 run to lead 10-5. The Lancers then forced a timeout after taking a 12-6 lead, but that didnít slow down CBU as it closed out the set scoring the final three points.
The Lancers return home Saturday for a 7 p.m. GSAC contest against San Diego Christian.
