ABILENE, TX--- The California Baptist University volleyball team closed out the regular season with a three-set loss to Abilene Christian on Thursday evening at Moody Coliseum.
The loss finalizes CBU's conference record at 3-9 while the Wildcats secure the fourth seed in the conference tournament and improve their record to 5-6. The Lancers will need two losses this week from UT Arlington to move into the fifth seed; otherwise, they will be locked into the sixth seed for the WAC Tournament.
The Lancers would score the opening two points of the set to gain a little early momentum, but the Wildcats would score nine of the next 12 points to take complete control of the set. CBU would remain close, but the set would slip away, fostered by a 7-1 run to the end frame by ACU. The Wildcats would take the 1-0 set lead with a 25-15 victory.
ACU had the early momentum in the second, and they would expand their lead to as many as ten points on a few different occasions. The Lancers would close the gap late, cutting the lead down to six, but the damage was too severe, and ACU would win the set 25-18.
The third set began with the Lancers opening up their largest lead of the match at 4-1. ACU would quickly erase that deficit with a monster scoring run, which saw the Wildcats score 11 of the next 13 points to regain momentum and put the Lancers in a tough spot. CBU would not give up so easily, executing a 7-2 run to slash the lead down to four, punctuated by an ace from Avery Barber. The Wildcats did not blink and secured the final two points they needed on kills to wrap up the match in straight sets, 25-19.
Emery DeJong would once again pace the Lancers in kills with 11, while Lucy Ryan was very solid with eight kills. Maddie Brown came off the bench and submitted a double-double performance with a team-high 23 assists and ten digs.
NEXT: The Lancers will await their final seeding as the Western Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals will begin on Thursday, November 20, in Abilene, TX.
