KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For the second straight year the Golden State Athletic Conference will send seven teams to NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championship and one of those teams is California Baptist University.
The 30th Annual NAIA Women's Volleyball National Tournament, sponsored by Siouxland Sports Medicine, will run from Dec. 1-5 inside the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Lancers (26-5) take the second seed overall and are the top seed in Pool B. Fellow GSAC member and No. 11-ranked Vanguard, who knocked off CBU earlier in the year in five sets, is the second seed in the pool. Taylor (Ind.) and Mobile (Ala.) round out Pool B.
No. 1 Fresno Pacific takes the top seed and has Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), Point Loma Nazarene and St. Ambrose (Iowa) in its pool as well. No. 10 Biola is the second seed in Pool C behind No. 3 Northwestern (Iowa) while No. 4 Concordia tops Pool D and No. 5 Azusa Pacific is the top seed in Pool E.
The only pool that doesn't feature a GSAC school is Pool F that is headlined by No. 6 Georgetown (Ky.)
The Lancers are going to their sixth straight NAIA National Championship and are the only team in the NAIA to reach the semifinals in each of the past five seasons. CBU won it all in 2004 and 2005 and were the national runners-up in 2007. CBU is 8-4 this year against the tournament field and holds a 45-17 record all-time at the national tournament in 13 appearances.
Pool play will run from Dec. 1-3 and the top two teams in each pool will advance to bracket play held Dec. 4-5.
POOL PLAY MATCH-UPS
vs. Mobile (Ala.), Dec. 1, 1 p.m. (CST) – The Lady Rams (24-10) earned an Opening Round match by winning the Gulf Coast Atlantic title and secured a spot at the final site with a 3-1 win over Savannah College of Art and Design. Mobile is making its third appearance at the national tournament and is 3-4 all time. This will be the first meeting between the Lancers and Lady Rams. Mobile is led by 2009 GCAC Player of the Year Whitney Knight who ripped 433 kills (3.55 kps). Knight was one of five Lady Rams to be named All-GCAC.
vs. Taylor (Ind.), Dec. 2, 1 p.m. (CST) – The Lady Trojans (35-5) finished the Mid Central Collegiate Conference undefeated at 8-0 and were ranked No. 16 in the final poll. Taylor hosted an Opening Round game after winning the MCC and punched its ticket to the Sioux City with a 3-0 win over Indiana East. MCC Setter of the Year Betsy Brown and MCC Libero of the Year Courtney Herschberger , two of the three All-MCC selections lead the way for the Lady Trojans. This is the fifth national tournament appearance for Taylor who holds a10-16 tournament record. This will be the first time Taylor and CBU have met head-to-head.
vs. Vanguard, Dec. 3, 3:15 p.m. (CST) – Unlike the first two games, this will not be the first time CBU has seen Vanguard (18-12). A Golden State Athletic Conference rival, the Lions and Lancers have played each other 62 times, including twice this year. The Lions won a 3-2 thriller at The Pit, Sept. 22, but CBU swept Vanguard 3-0 inside Van Dyne Gym. It's no secret that All-GSAC selection Kelsey Wirt is the go-to player for the Lions. Wirt ripped 23 kills in the first meeting this year, but was held to just three kills at CBU. This is the second straight tournament appearance for the Lions who went 3-2 in their first appearance last season. CBU owns the all-time series with the Lions, 45-17 and has won six of the last seven meetings. The Lions received one of 11 automatic bids to the national site after receiving one of the eight at-large bids in the 36-team field.
