FULLERTON, Calif. ? California Baptist University continued its dominance in the NAIA winning its ninth straight game over an NAIA opponent with a 3-1 (31-29, 38-36, 29-31, 30-25) victory over No. 4 Hope International.
The Lancers (14-5) won their fifth straight and 10th in 11 matches, but it didn't come easy.
The four set match featured 38 ties and 16 lead chances in the first three sets. The fourth set was the only one that actually ended when CBU reached 30 points.
It looked like the Lancers were going to easily cruise in the opening set, scoring the first five points of the match. The Royals answered with a 5-1 run to tie it at 6-6. Both teams traded points until Hope broke a 12-12 tie when Aurel Stenzel ripped a kill and CBU recorded a pair of attacking errors to give the Royals a 15-12 lead. CBU then trailed 18-15 before Adam Church sparked a 4-0 run with a kill as the Lancers retook the lead at 19-18. The set featured seven more ties until Adiel Tiedjop blasted a kill to give CBU set point at 30-29. The Lancers then took advantage of a HIU attacking error to jump up 1-0 in the match.
It was the Royals who jumped out early in the second set and held their biggest lead of the set on two occasions with the last one coming at 18-9. CBU began to chip away at the lead and finally tied it at 29 after facing three set points. Trailing 29-26, Tiedjop ripped bookend kills and served an ace in between to tie the set. After six more ties, CBU again faced a Royals' set point at 36-35. HIU committed a service error and Tiedjop posted a kill to give set point over to CBU. Another Royals' error put the Lancers up 2-0 in the match.
Neither team led by more than three in the third set and Hope had to battle back from facing match point at 29-28. Stenzel notched a kill before Alex Figueiredo gave set point to the Royals. Noah Casaquit forced a fourth set with a kill to close out the set.
It was all CBU in the final set. The Lancers never trailed and hit their highest percentage the entire match at .314 (17-6-35).
Tiedjop was just two kills shy of tying a school-record for kills in a four-set match with a match-high 30. The junior hit .360, served a pair of aces and recorded four digs and four blocks. Levi Cabral ripped 23 kills and posted seven digs.
Blair Penner dished out a match-high 66 assists and tied with Mike MacNeill for a team-high three aces. Micah Tokuda and MacNeill also posted a match-high eight digs. Marcus Vinicius was one block off tying a career-high with seven blocks. Church also posted six blocks while the Lancers as a team recorded 14.5 blocks.
