STOCKTON, Calif. ? Adiel Tiedjop and Levi Cabral combined for 47 of California Baptist University's 64 kills in a 3-0 (30-20, 30-26, 31-33, 30-27) win over Pacific Friday night.
Tiedjop led the Lancers (21-5) with 24 kills and hit .413 while Cabral was close behind with 23 kills and hit .326. Tiedjop also served up three aces and posted seven digs. Mike MacNeill was just a kill short of double figures with nine. Blair Penner dished out 55 assists and served a match-high four aces to go with his five digs and three blocks.
Adam Cook posted a career-high 16 digs while Adam Church notched five blocks.
CBU hit .313 (64-22-134), served nine aces and posted nine team blocks. The Tigers posted 41 digs, compared to the Lancers' 38, and had 10 team blocks, but hit just .192.
The Lancers hit just .222 and .212 in the first two sets but held UOP to a .000 and .167 clip in the first two sets to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
The Lancers trailed just once in the first set and that was at 1-0. CBU scored the next five points to take a 5-1 lead and then later used a 6-1 run to take a 12-4 lead. The Tigers stayed in that eight-point range and even cut it to 21-18 before CBU closed out the set with a 9-2 run to take a 1-0 match lead. That run featured a pair of kills from both Tiedjop and Cabral and two aces from Penner.
CBU never could pull away from Pacific in the second set, leading by five on three occasions with the last coming at 20-15. The Lancers led 10-5 and 15-10, but each time UOP made a run. CBU took its biggest lead of the set at 21-16 before the Tigers got within one again at 22-21. Both teams traded points until a Tiedjop kill sparked a 4-0 run, that was capped by a Cabral kill, to give the Lancers set point at 29-24. Pacific scored the next two points, but Cabral put it away with the final kill of the match.
The third set featured 22 ties before the Tigers scored three straight on a CBU service error, a Kevin Pratte kill and a Dylan Walker ace to take their first set of the match. That was the only set Pacific won as the Lancers took the fourth and final set.
The final set wasn't easy for CBU as the Lancers never led by more than three. After 13 ties, CBU took control with a Tiedjop kill and a Pacific error to go up 24-22. Another CBU error made it 24-23, but Tiedjop ripped another kill and UOP gave up another point with an error to put the Lancers out in front 26-23. Both teams just traded points down the stretch before Penner and Garet Kreutziger posted a double block for the win.
CBU now goes from Stockton, to Palo Alto, Calif., to take on Stanford tomorrow at 7 p.m.
