IRVINE, Calif. --- The NAIA's No. 7-ranked Concordia continued its hot play and pulled off its second straight win over a higher ranked opponent Tuesday with a narrow 5-4 win on its home courts over No. 6 California Baptist University.
The loss snaps the Lancers' five-match winning streak as they fall to 8-5 overall, 5-3 GSAC. The Eagles, who were coming off an upset of No. 3 Azusa Pacific, improve to 8-3, 6-2.
“This loss is a hard one to swallow,” said CBU Head Coach Chris Taylor. “Don't get me wrong, Concordia is a solid team, but I'm not sure we played our best tennis today. The girls did a great job to split the singles, but we were flat in doubles.”
The match started with singles' play, and the Lancers and Eagles split the six matches down the middle. The Eagles won the top three courts, winning at No. 1, 2 and 3. The Lancers won the bottom three courts, winning at No. 4, 5 and 6. Concordia took a quick 2-1 lead with a win at No. 2 and No. 1. The Lancers, though, evened up the match with wins at No. 4 from Aurelie Hascoet and No. 5 from Dunya Wren. After the Eagles took a 3-2 advantage with a win at No. 3, Jessica Roddy evened the match right back up with a 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 win over Natalie Vanier at No. 6.
With the match tied at 3-3 heading to doubles, it was a race to two points. Concordia won the first two points, winning identical 8-5 decisions at No. 2 and 3. Marcela Monatanha and Wren picked up the Lancers' lone doubles' win with an 8-5 win over Jennifer Sher and Kristin Yep at No. 1.
