RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The NAIA's No. 2 Fresno Pacific won two of three doubles and parlayed that momentum into five singles' wins in a 7-2 win over No. 6 California Baptist University Thursday afternoon at the Pentz Tennis Center.
The loss is the Lancers' second straight as they fall to 8-6 overall, 5-4 GSAC. The Sunbirds improve to 11-1, 10-0.
The Sunbirds jumped out to a quick lead, winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. They nearly made it a sweep, going up 4-1 at No. 3, but Jessica Roddy and Aurelie Hascoet battled back to steal an 8-4 win. The Lancers nearly stole a point at No. 1. Marcela Montanha and Dunya Wren led 5-4, but Maria Klokotzky and Ornella Gentile won four of the next five points for the win.
In singles' play, Wren picked up the Lancers' lone point with a 6-7, 6-3, 10-1 win over Yulia Blinovskaya at No. 5. Hascoet nearly picked up another point but narrowly fell, 5-7, 6-3, 10-8 to Vanessa Heroux at No. 4.
“Fresno is a really good team, and I'm not going to take anything away from them,” said CBU Head Coach Chris Taylor, “but we could've won at No. 4 to make it 6-3. Then if we win that No. 1 doubles' match, it becomes a 5-4 match. If we could find a way to win one more court, then we win the match, so I don't think we are as far away from them as the score indicated. The girls played hard today and gave a good effort.”
