STANFORD, Calif. ? Some may have expected California Baptist University and Stanford to only go three sets, but it might be hard to find someone who thought it would be in the favor of the Lancers. In the biggest win of the season, the NAIA's No. 1 team cut down the NCAA's sixth-ranked Cardinal with a 3-0 (30-27, 30-26, 30-28) sweep.
It was the 13th straight win for the Lancers (22-5) and the 18th win in 19 matches. It was the highest ranked NCAA team that CBU has defeated in the 2009 season. The win also makes CBU 4-4 against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponents this year.
Adiel Tiedjop ripped a match-high 23 kills and hit .459 (23-6-37) all while posting a double-double with a match-high 11 digs. Mike MacNeill also had a big night as he just missed a double-double with nine kills and nine digs. MacNeill also hit his highest percentage against an NCAA team with at .438 (9-2-16). The Lancers also got 45 assists from Blair Penner and seven blocks from Adam Church. Levi Cabral chimed in with 13 kills, eight digs and four blocks.
“Whilly (Tiedjop) was on fire tonight and Mike had one of his best hitting nights of the year,” said CBU head coach Ryan McGuyre. “Blair was his usual self and kept putting the ball where it needed to be. We also had a big night from Adam. This is easily the biggest win of the year for us and hopefully we can carry this momentum through the final two matches of the regular season.”
The Lancers, who are normally known for their strength of serve, had just two aces, but were aced just once by Stanford. CBU out dug, 38-27, and out blocked, 10-9, the Cardinal and hit at a .317 (54-21-104) clip compared to a .229 (44-19-109) clip for Stanford.
“Normally I would say we would have to be really on our serves and have a few aces to pull off a win like this,” said McGuyre. “Tonight we just stayed consistent and played within the system.”
CBU hit just .188 in the opening set, but held Stanford to .140. The Lancers then hit .333 and .417 in the final two sets.
The match featured 40 ties with 36 of those coming in the final two sets.
The Lancers trailed 25-18 in the opening set, but used a 12-2 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Cabral sparked the run with a kill before the Cardinal committed an error and Tiedjop missed a serve to make it 26-20. Church then came up with a solo block and then combined with Cabral to get a double-block to pull within three at 26-23. Another Stanford error made it 26-24 and forced a Cardinal timeout. MacNeill answered the timeout with a block before Cabral and Church combined for another double block to tie the set at 26. MacNeill gave CBU its first lead of the match, at 27-26, with a kill before he and Church posted a double-block to give CBU a 28-26 advantage. The Lancers took set point on a Cardinal error and then took the set on a service error.
“That set was the key for setting the whole tone of the match,” said McGuyre. “It was tight the rest of the match so winning that one the way we did was just what we needed to do.”
Neither team led by more than three in the second set. The Lancers gained the advantage by breaking a 25-25 tie, scoring three straight to take a 28-25 lead. Tiedjop blasted a kill and then Church and Cabral posted back-to-back double-blocks to take the three-point lead. Stanford got a kill to make it 28-26, but committed an error to give set point to CBU and Tiedjop put it away with another kill.
The final set nearly mirrored the third with neither team leading by more than two. With scored tied at 28-28 Cabral gave set point to the Lancers with a kill and forced a Cardinal timeout. On the ensuing play Adam Cook mishit a dig toward the stands, but MacNeill raced to the sidelines to bring it back in play. MacNeill got just enough of the ball to push it back over the net. The problem for Stanford was that nobody played the ball and allowed it to fall and allowed CBU to pull off the upset.
The Lancers now go for the complete road sweep, Tuesday, when they travel to UC Santa Barbara for a 7 p.m. contest.
