RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The NAIA's No. 7-ranked California Baptist University swept through doubles play and then kept the momentum going into singles' play to post a 9-0 win over NCAA Division I Villanova at the Pentz Tennis Center Thursday afternoon.
With the win, the Lancers improve to 5-4 overall with their second straight win. The Wildcats fall to 0-5.
Marcela Montanha and Dunya Wren defeated Jaclyn Williamson and Allison Solberg, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. Raquel Vescovi and Maiara Oliveira downed Daniella Phillis and Kristin Gobberg, 8-5 at No. 2, and Aurelie Hascoet and Jelena Savic rolled past Carla Erskine and Emily Urda, 8-1, at No. 3 to give the Lancers a quick 3-0 lead after doubles.
Vescovi (6-4, 6-1 at No. 1), Montanha (6-2, 6-3 at No. 2), Wren (6-1, 6-1 at No. 4), Savic (6-2, 6-1 at No. 5) and Oliveira (7-5, 6-1 at No. 6) all won in straight sets. Hascoet was pushed to three sets but still downed Courtney Reed, 0-6, 6-4, 10-5, at No. 3.
