RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The NAIA's No. 6-ranked California Baptist University won its ninth straight match with a 6-3 win over No. 12 Point Loma Nazarene on a hot Tuesday at the Pentz Tennis Center.
The win improves the Lancers to 17-6 overall, 13-4 GSAC, while the Sea Lions fall to 11-10, 8-9.
Playing singles' matches first, the Lancers jumped out to a 4-2 lead after singles' play. The Sea Lions won the first point when Raquel Vescovi retired trailing 6-5 to Kristin Strimple in the first set at No. 1. Kimberly Haynes gave PLNU a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jelena Savic at No. 3.
However, the Lancers responded with four wins to finish off singles. All four of their wins were in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 win from Dunya Wren at No. 4.
Needing just one point in doubles' play, the Lancers' No. 3 team of Aurelie Hascoet and Maiara Oliveira defeated Isabella Tumini and Samantha Mohr, 8-1, to clinch the match. Wren and Marcela Montanha finished off the win with an 8-6 win over Strimple and Rachel Owens at No. 1
"Today was a hot one," said CBU Head Coach Chris Taylor. "We haven't had this kind of heat all season, and the girls weren't quite acclimated, but they made a decision to grind it out and got the job done."
