RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The NAIA's No. 6-ranked California Baptist University won its school-record 15th match, pushing its winning streak to a program-record seven straight in the process with a 5-4 victory over No. 9 Vanguard Tuesday afternoon at the Pentz Tennis Center.
With the win, the Lancers improve to 15-6 overall, 11-4 GSAC, bettering last year's old record of 14 wins. The Lions fall to 11-7, 9-6.
Played as the first part of a doubleheader with the men's teams, the match started with singles' play. The Lions took a quick 1-0 lead when Hana Jurcovicova defeated Raquel Vescovi 6-2, 6-0. However, the Lancers won three straight courts, winning at No. 5 (Aurelie Hascoet), No. 6 (Maiara Oliveira) and No. 4 (Dunya Wren) to take a 3-1 lead.
Kateryna Malakhova defeated Jelena Savic 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 to bring the Lions within 3-2, but All-American Marcela Montanha put the Lancers within one point of clinching the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Betyel Tesfa at No. 2.
Right out of the gate, the Lancers clinched the match when Vescovi and Oliveira defeated Maria Xavier and Brittnie Furuvald, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles. The Lions won the other two courts for the final two points.
“Today was a rough day to play tennis,” said CBU Head Coach Chris Taylor. “The wind was out of control sometimes. The girls did an outstanding job of staying focused through the singles, though. We struggled in doubles today, but Maiara and Raquel did a good job of stepping up and closing out the match.”
