IRVINE, Calif. — The marathon is over and California Baptist University is unscathed after CBU downed Westminster, 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-22), and Oklahoma City, 3-1 (25-16, 25-12, 29-31, 25-22) Saturday in the final regular season tournament of the year.
The Lancers (11-0) complete their last five-match weekend of the regular season and are just one win short of tying last year's 12-match season-opening win streak. The school record is 17 straight to open the season set back in 1999.
Kari Oliver set a career record for digs, that was later broken against Oklahoma City, with 17 in the win over Westminster. Colleen Sweeney was one block shy of tying a career record with eight and Ingrid Carmona set a career record with five blocks. Noelle Dyk and Fei Shi combined for 19 kills with Dyk notching a match-high 10. Krista Hasemeyer and Danielle Sargant each handed out 15 assists.
The Lancers had 10.5 blocks compared to the Griffins' two and out-dug Westminster, 43-33.
CBU trailed early in the first set, 9-7, but a Griffin error and a Bree Rauschenbach ace tied it at 9-9. Dyk then tied it at 10-10 with a kill before the Lancers closed out the first set with a 15-3 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the Lancers led 16-11 before Westminster closed it to 16-13. The Lancers then used a 9-5 run to take a 2-0 match lead. CBU led 20-11 and were rolling in the third before the Griffins began to make a late move. Westminster went on an 11-3 run to make it 23-22, but that was as close as the Griffins came. Jessica Ewoldt smashed a kill and the Griffins committed a handling error to close out the match.
Against the Stars, CBU quickly jumped out in front of OCU 2-0, but struggled to put away the Stars in the third set. OCU had set point seven times in the third with the last at 30-29 and eventually put it away on an Adrienne Tillery kill to make it 2-1 in the match.
The Lancers put the match to bed in the fourth, though, behind the arm of Dyk who had six kills in just the final set alone. The senior finished with 14 kills just one behind Shi who ripped a match-high 15 and notched another double-double with 10 digs.
Oliver set another career record with 22 digs. It was the third straight match she has pushed that career high even further. Ewoldt and Sweeney were in double figure kills with Ewoldt notching 12 and Sweeney 11.
The Lancers will now get set for the gauntlet of Golden State Athletic Conference games. CBU opened GSAC play with a win over Westmont and will travel to No. 4 Azusa Pacific, Thursday, for a 7 p.m. contest.
