RIVERSIDE, Calif. — If you would have told Ryan McGuyre that his team would be 3-2 to start the season with all five opponents ranked inside the NCAA's top 10 he might have thought you were a little nuts. If you told him that all three wins would come over teams that California Baptist has never defeated, he might have wanted to pray for you.
Three straight days now the Lancers have unseated an NCAA power with wins over No. 7 Long Beach State, No. 8 UCLA and Saturday night completed the trifecta with a 3-2 (30-23, 30-25, 29-31, 27-30, 16-14) win over No. 4 Pepperdine.
“I'll take this record in a heartbeat,” said McGuyre. “Especially with the teams that we have been able to play to start the season. I thought we might be able to get one up at Santa Barbara, but to finish third there and to grab this win tonight is big thing. I've been coaching long enough that sometimes things just go your way. For those to be the three wins we have right now is pretty special.”
CBU entered tonight's contest 0-6 all-time against the Waves (0-1), but outlasted Pepperdine in a grueling five set match.
Adiel Tiedjop and Levi Cabral combined for 50 of the Lancers' 69 kills. Tiedjop led the way for CBU with a season-high 26 kills to go with six digs and two blocks. Cabral ripped 2 kills and served a pair of aces.
Garet Kreutziger posted eight kills, hitting .385, and had a career-high eight blocks. Mohamed Khattab had seven kills, five blocks and a pair of aces. Blair Penner ran the show for the Lancers with 62 assists, three aces and five digs.
Pepperdine hit -.069 in the opening set as CBU controlled a majority of the first set. The Waves led 8-5 in the first set before Tiedjop sparked a 6-1 run with a kill to put the Lancers up 11-9. Pepperdine scored three straight to retake the lead at 12-11, but the Lancers answered, scoring six straight to jump out to a 17-12 lead and didn't trail from there to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Tiedjop ripped nine kills in the second set as CBU hit .438 (20-6-32) while holding the Waves to a .250 clip. CBU led from start to finish, but never led by more than four until the final point was scored. After the Lancers took a 12-8 lead, Pepperdine closed the gap to one on five different occasions. Pepperdine closed the deficit to 22-21 late, but the Lancers scored four straight to take a 26-22 lead and held the Waves off from that point on.
In the third set, the Lancers led 17-12 before the Waves used an 8-3 run to tie the set at 20. The two teams traded service errors before Cabral and a Pepperdine error gave the Lancers a 23-21 lead. The Waves then used a 7-2 run to climb out to a 28-25 lead. That's when CBU got a kill from Tiedjop and back-to-back errors from the Waves to tie the set at 28. Tyler Jaynes then ripped a kill for the Waves, but Cabral answered right back to tie it at 29. Maurice Torres gave set point again to Pepperdine with a kill and a CBU error gave the set to Pepperdine.
The Lancers controlled most of the fourth set and led 22-16 before Pepperdine used a 9-1 run to take a 25-23 lead. The Lancers answered back, scoring four straight to lead 27-25. That was the last point the Lancers scored as the Waves scored five straight to take the set and force a fifth.
Pepperdine quickly jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the final set, but CBU scored two straight to make it 7-5. Tiedjop brought the Lancers within one at 10-9, but the Waves secured some breathing room with three straight to take a 13-9 lead. The Lancers then tied it at 13 with a Waves service error, two straight blocks and a Cabral kill that forced a Pepperdine timeout. Another Lancers block gave CBU match point, but the Waves answered to tie it at 14. Cabral gave CBU another match-point with a kill from the right side and then Khattab put it away with a kill.
CBU will now travel to Santa Cruz, Calif., Saturday to take on Springfield College (Mass.) and UC Santa Cruz.
