SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — Three Lancers scored in double figures as California Baptist University fell 76-58 to The Master's in a Golden State Athletic Conference game Thursday afternoon.
Heather Couzens scored a team-high 16 points while Brenna Hahn and Megan Bradford each scored 15. Couzens scored all of her points in the first half and Bradford scored all of hers in the second.
Couzens was 7-for-11 from the field in the first half and hit both free throws to notch 16 points. She, along with Hahn each had six rebounds in the first half while Hahn scored nine points before intermission.
After not attempting a shot in the first half, Bradford went 6-for-12 from the field and 3-for-8 from beyond the arc in the second half.
The Lancers (10-7, 3-4) have dropped three straight after starting the conference season at 3-1. As a team, CBU shot 42.3 percent from the field and turned the ball over 27 times, 17 of which came in the first half. The Master's bench also outscored CBU's 25-7.
There were nine lead changes in the first 9:15 of the first half until the Mustangs used a 13-2 run to take a 27-15 lead. The Master's led 29-17 with 5:54 left in the half before Couzens hit back-to-back buckets to cut the deficit to eight and Nikki Johnson got a steal and a layup to make it 29-23 with 3:35 left until intermission. TMC pushed it back to a 9-point lead and led 34-25 when Hahn sank four straight free throws to bring CBU within five at 34-29 and then headed into the half down 36-31
The Mustangs quickly took a 41-31 lead to start the second half, but the Lancers answered right back with two straight steals that led to layups by Bradford before Hahn closed the gap to 41-37 with another lay in. The Mustangs answered with five straight to push the lead back out to 11. The closest the Lancers came the rest of the way was 56-48 on a Hahn trey that with 11:44 left to play. The Mustangs then closed out the game with a 20-10 run to put the game away.
CBU stays on the road Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. contest at Point Loma Nazarene.
