IRVINE, Calif. --- Levi Cabral ripped a match-high 15 kills for California Baptist University in a 3-0 (30-22, 30-22, 30-21) loss to NCAA Division No. 2 and defending national champion UC Irvine.
The Lancers (0-1) were held to just a .160 (34-18-100) hitting percentage while the Anteaters (1-0) hit .522 (55-8-90). The UCI players were in double figures with Carson Clark leading the way with 15 kills.
Blair Penner led the way for CBU at setter with 26 assists and notched a team high six digs. Matthew Walsh matched Penner with six digs as well. Garet Kreutziger and Mike MacNeill served a pair of aces while Kreutziger posted a pair of blocks. Ricky Brazee made his debut as a Lancer with four blocks as CBU totaled five team blocks.
CBU led early in the first set at 6-5 and after UCI took the lead, the Lancers never trailed my more than six and were down just 24-20. That's when the Anteaters used a 6-2 run to close out the set and take a 1-0 match lead. The second set nearly mirrored the third as the Lancers scored the first point of the set and matched UCI point for point up to a 17-17 tie. Again UCI flipped the switch and took a 2-0 match lead with a 13-5 run to close out the set. It was all UCI in the final set as they opened their title defense with a sweep over CBU.
The Lancers will now travel to the Elephant Bar Tournament at UC Santa Barbara Thursday and Friday before opening the home season Saturday at 4 p.m. against No. 4 Pepperdine.
