SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Over the seven seasons Ryan McGuyre has been the head coach at California Baptist University, he has taken down some of biggest names in men's volleyball. Just two games into his eighth season, McGuyre notched another win over a top 10 team with a 3-2 (31-29, 27-30, 28-30, 30-28, 15-13) win over No. 7 Long Beach State.
Of the 12 members of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, no doubt the toughest men's volleyball conference in the nation, McGuyre boasted wins over nine of those schools coming into Thursday's first round match at the Santa Barbara Invitational. The number went to 10 with the win over Long Beach State, the first victory over the 49ers in school history.
“This was one of the giants we have yet to get,” said McGuyre. “This is exciting to have this win so early. This lets us know what we are capable of and raises our standards and expectations. We kind of wrestled through the preseason with some up and down exhibitions. We definitely have started improving. Our intensity levels are much higher than what we started out with.”
Levi Cabral was the go-to man for the Lancers (1-1). The sophomore nearly matched his school record 38 kills set last year with 36 against Long Beach State. Cabral hit .406 (36-10-64) and had 11 digs for his first double-double of the season.
Adiel Tiedjop was close behind Cabral with 18 kills and 11 digs as CBU had 54 digs while hitting .250. Garet Kreutiziger also had three aces and seven blocks. Ricky Brazee also had four blocks as CBU had 12 team blocks.
“Coming back in the first set was the key for us,” said McGuyre after his team trailed 28-24 in the opening set before using a 7-1 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match. “After that we just kept fighting and were able to pull out the match. Levi was on fire. He was in a rhythm and just was so hard to stop. Adiel was consistent as well and had an impact for us.”
No. 9 Cal State Northridge was the only thing standing in CBU's way and the finals of the Santa Barbara Invitational, but the Matadors moved into the finals with a 3-1 (30-21, 30-32, 30-19, 30-19) win over the Lancers. CBU will play No. 8 UCLA, Friday, at 4 p.m. for third place.
