GIANT KILLERS

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Thursday morning California Baptist University Head Coach Ryan McGuyre said that Long Beach State was a giant that he hadn't beaten yet after the Lancers knocked off the seventh-ranked 49ers in five sets. Well McGuyre's Lancers must be giant killers after CBU took down another team it had never defeated before with a 3-0 (35-33, 31-29, 30-19) sweep of No. 8 UCLA.
Six times the Lancers (2-2) have played the heavily favored Bruins and six times UCLA put them away. Three times CBU had forced a fifth set, but could never pull off the upset until Friday night. The win gave the Lancers third place in the Santa Barbara Invitational which featured eight teams, including seven NCAA Division I schools all ranked in top 15 in the preseason poll.
Levi Cabral was brilliant again for CBU with a match high 18 kills to go with his four digs and four blocks. The sophomore also hit .314 and served a pair of aces. Adiel Tiedjop also had double-figure kills with 10 and also posted seven digs, three blocks and two aces as well.
Blair Penner finished with 31 assists and served a match-high three aces. He also notched five blocks and four digs. Ricky Brazee led the defense at the net with a career-high six blocks while Garet Kreutziger and Mohamed Khattab each had four.
“Our depth came into play tonight,” said McGuyre. “UCLA may have been tired after the two matches they played yesterday, but we weren't the freshest team either. We got what we needed out of our big guys and a lot out of everyone else.”
CBU posted a season high 14.5 blocks while holding the Bruins to just 8.5. The Lancers also held UCLA to just a .191 (41-23-94) clip.
The first set featured 18 ties total as neither team gained more than a two-point advantage until a streak of four straight points by UCLA gave the Bruins a 19-15 lead. Cabral then ripped back-to-back kills and Tiedjop served an ace to pull the Lancers within one and force a UCLA timeout. The Bruins later pushed it back out to a 3-point lead at 24-21, but again the Lancers fired back. A UCLA service error made it 24-22 before Mike MacNeill served his only ace of the contest. Tiedjop and Kreutziger then tied it at 24 with a double block.
That set off a string of 10 straight ties with the last one coming at 33-33. A UCLA service error gave set point to the Lancers before the Bruins' Dylan Bowermaster missed an attack to put the Lancers up 1-0 in the match.
“Winning that first set is always a key as just a belief factor,” said McGuyre. “It definitely helped give us confidence. We didn't block Cal State Northridge well and blocking was a key in this set and match as a whole. They helped us a little after Mo and Adiel blocked a few of their shots.”
The second set also ventured past the 30-point mark, but only after the Lancers blew a 7-point lead. CBU stormed out to a 17-10 advantage, but UCLA answered with a 16-9 run to tie the set back at 26. Each team traded a point before a UCLA service error and a double block by Cabral and Brazee gave the Lancers set point. The Bruins answered with two straight kills from Garrett Maugututia, who finished with a team-high 14 kills, to tie it at 29. The Lancers answered with a kill from Brazee and another error from UCLA sealed the set and put CBU up 2-0.
“That run UCLA had hurt because I thought we were in control,” said McGuyre. “We had the opportunity to put it away. We had a few hitting errors but were able to pull it out. I was glad we stayed composed to finish off game two. It was key to taking game three. We took a step back we were able to get Ricky the ball down the stretch. That made the difference in heading into the final set.”
It was all Lancers in the third set. CBU never trailed and took complete control with a 10-3 lead to open the set. The Bruins cut the deficit to five at 16-11, but the Lancers put it out of reach an 11-5 run and sealed with a Cabral ace.
With the win over UCLA, that means the Lancers have defeated 11 of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federations 12 teams that play men's volleyball. The only team CBU has not upset, in the program's history, in the MPSF is Pepperdine, a team that the Lancers face Saturday at 4 p.m. inside the Van Dyne Gym.
