COSTA MESA, Calif. --- No. 6 California Baptist University got a 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 25-15) on the road against Vanguard Tuesday night.
It was a dog fight for the first three sets, but the Lancers found another gear in the fourth to end the match with an impressive final-game 25-15 victory.
“Vanguard has been playing everyone tough lately, especially at home,” said CBU Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “I think we learned from some of our past losses tonight and finished well.”
CBU dominated nearly every statistical category in the match, but the home team Lions found a way to scrape together points when necessary in keeping the match close.
The Lancers looked ready to run away with things early, jumping out to an 18-9 lead in the first set. The Lions however fought back using a four point run to cut the lead to just five at 23-18. Ingrid Carmona had seen enough, however, and ripped two of her match-high 22 kills to end the set.
The Lions got nine errors from the Lancers in the second game to even things up. CBU had its lowest hitting percentage of the night at .093 in the second. Even so, the Lancers held an 18-17 lead late in the game, but were outscored 8-3 down the stretch.
Vanguard's solid play carried into the third set as the Lions held a 12-11 lead early on. CBU would go on a five-point run to take what seemed to be a commanding, but the Lions had a five-point of their own to knot the match back up at 22-22. The Lancers got the final spurt of points, scoring three straight to take the set. Carmona once again had two kills to end the game.
“Game three was the key set tonight,” said McGuyre. “We had to have that win and we got it.”
The final game had far less drama with CBU out-scoring the Lions 15-5 to end the match in dominating fashion. The Lancers hit .538 in the final game, recording just one attack error in the set.
On the match CBU out-hit the Lions .291-.148.
“Nevena Dragovic ran a good offense for us tonight,” said McGuyre of the freshman setter who had 49 assists in the match. “Our passing wasn't the best, but she was able to work with it and that was the key to us hitting a good percentage.”
The Lancers improve to 25-4 overall, 12-3 GSAC, while the Lions fall to 13-11, 5-10.
The win gives the Lancers two consecutive victories going into a huge matchup with No. 3 Biola Saturday at home.
“We always take things one match at a time, but it was good to get out of there in four with that match coming up,” said McGuyre. “Vanguard has been taking a lot of teams to five sets so it was nice to end the match on a good note and add to our confidence going into Saturday.”
