FULLERTON, Calif. --- Levi Cabral, Adiel Tiedjop and Mohamed Khattab combined for 76 of California Baptist University's single-match record 89 kills, and the NAIA's No. 1-ranked Lancers hit a match-high 45.5 percent in the final set to sneak past No. 3 Hope International, 3-2 (32-34, 30-21, 25-30, 30-28, 15-12), Wednesday night.
The Lancers improve to 10-4 with the win, while the Royals drop to 5-3.
In a rematch of last year's NAIA National Invitational Tournament Semifinals, the Lancers out-hit the Royals, .281-.241 and had 24 more kills (89-65). The Lancers also had a whopping 18 teams blocks, 10 more than the Royals. But most impressively, the Lancers came back from a 2-1 hole and a 25-22 deficit in the fourth set, snatching victory from the claws of defeat.
Cabral led all players with 33 kills to go along with nine digs and seven blocks. Tiedjop had 29 kills, a match-high 17 digs and five blocks. Khattab finished with 14 kills, hitting .522 (14-2-23). Ricky Brazee had 14 blocks, the second highest total in program history, bettered only by Artur Kusio's 16 back in 2004.
Alex Figueiredo led the Royals with 24 kills.
The Lancers committed 33 attack errors, but only had three in the final set. As a result, they never trailed in the fifth set after jumping out to a 2-0 lead with back-to-back kills from Cabral. There were five ties in the set, the last coming at 8-8, but Cabral's final kill of the night gave the Lancers the lead for good. A Tiedjop kill pushed the lead to 13-10, and four points later, he killed the match with his 29th kill.
Amazingly, there were only 10 lead changes in the entire match, but there were 37 ties, 13 of them in the first set.
The Royals took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 30-25 win in the third set, taking advantage of the Lancers' worst offensive set of the match. CBU hit just .143 (16-9-49) in that set.
It seemed as if the Royals were going to close out the match as they opened a 20-14 lead on a kill by Kaimi Guerreiro. However, Tiedjop smashed a kill, and then Blair Penner served two of his three aces to give the Lancers a 20-17 lead, forcing a Royal timeout. The Royals scored out of the timeout and led 25-22 after a Cabral service error. The Lancers, though, scored three straight to catch the Royals on a block by Garet Kreutziger and Penner. A Brazee and Tiedjop block gave them their first lead at 27-26, and then Cabral finished the 8-3 flurry to close the set and force a fifth game.
Penner finished with a program single-match record 81 assists.
