RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- After earning a watershed victory early in the season over Long Beach State, California Baptist University was unable to repeat the feat on Thursday night.
Long Beach State, ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Division I poll, defeated the NAIA's top-ranked Lancers in straight sets, 30-22, 30-18, 30-24, at The Pyramid on Thursday night.
This was the second meeting of the season between the two powerhouse programs. CBU earned a five-game victory over Long Beach State on Jan. 7 in the Elephant Bar Tournament at UC Santa Barbara. It was the first victory over the 49ers in CBU history.
California Baptist hit just .207 on the night and had 16 attack errors. Levi Cabral led the Lancers with nine kills – including six in the first game –and Mohamed Khattab added eight.
Long Beach State was strong offensively in the first two games, hitting .519 in the opener and .560 in the second frame. It was held to a .250 hitting clip in the third game but had five aces in the third game.
Long Beach State had 14 blocks while CBU was held to just eight.
The Lancers are 10-5 on the season and next play Grand Canyon on Feb. 26-27 in Phoenix.
CBU falls to 1-10 all-time against Long Beach State, a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, which is widely regarded as the nation's top volleyball conference.
Tommy Pestolesi had a match-high 12 kills for Long Beach State and Jim Baughman added 11. Conor Eaton had 33 assists for the 49ers.
