RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University put together a furious second-half rally but could not overcome its own mistakes in an 82-71 Golden State Athletic Conference loss to The Master's Thursday night at Van Dyne Gymnasium.
After falling behind by as many as 17 early, the Lancers put together a 21-5 run midway through the second half to tie the game at 60-60 on a lay-up by Brenna Hahn with 7:28 remaining.
During the run, CBU held the Mustangs to one field goal over a 10-minute stretch and limited them to a 32-percent shooting clip in the second half. But after Hahn's game-tying right-hander in traffic, The Master's responded with a 10-2 run to put the game away.
“Our defensive intensity totally picked up,” CBU coach Danelle Bishop said. “Our physicality gave us some confidence. We got really physical and forced them into turnovers that got us some momentum. Those runs are key in games like this.”
Senior Megan Bradford had a game-high 23 points for the Lancers. She was a career-best 7-for-11 from three-point range. Hahn added 20 points, her fifth straight 20-point game, and Heather Couzens had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Master's took a 44-32 lead into the half thanks to a barrage of three-pointers midway through the half that broke open what was a close game. With California Baptist holding a 12-7 lead, the Mustangs hit six three-pointers over the next 11 minutes of game action to spark a 37-15 run.
California Baptist shot well from the field in the half, going 13-of-29 (44.8 percent) but turned the ball over 13 times and missed all six of its first-half free-throw attempts. The Master's turned the 13 turnovers into 18 points in the period.
The Lancers struggled from the free-throw line, making just 10 of their 21 attempts.
“Our free-throws killed us,” Bishop said. “That's been the story of our lives. You can't expect to be a good team and shoot 50 percent from the line.”
With the loss, the Lancers fall to 12-15 on the season and 5-12 in the Golden State Athletic Conference with three regular-season games remaining. The Master's improves to 15-9 overall, 10-6 in the GSAC.
The loss drops CBU into the eighth place in the GSAC. The top eight teams advance to the conference tournament.
CBU has lost 11 of its past 13 games. The Master's has won 21 of the past 26 in the series, including a season sweep this year.
The Master's had all five starters score in double figures, led by Erica Inge's 18 points. Jenna Reed and Brittany Henderson had 16 points apiece.
California Baptist wraps up its home schedule on Tuesday against Point Loma Nazarene. It will be the final home game for seven seniors.
