PHOENIX, Ariz. --- A night after posting a three-game sweep over Grand Canyon, California Baptist University was pushed to the limit.
But behind 27 kills from Levi Cabral and 25 from Adiel Tiedjop, the Lancers escaped Phoenix with a 30-28, 38-40, 24-30, 30-22, 15-11 victory over the 'Lopes.
Tiedjop and Cabral had back-to-back kills to close out the first game setting up a second game in which neither team led by more than two points the entire stretch. CBU had game point at two different points in the game, but could not capitalize. GCU's Taylor Griffin served an ace for the decisive point in the second game.
Grand Canyon hit .405 in the third game, extending its lead midway through the game and putting the Lancers on the brink of suffering a loss, before they turned things around in the fourth.
CBU hit .389 in the fourth game and played well defensively in the fourth and fifth games, holding Grand Canyon to hitting clips of .176 and .050 in the final two games, respectively.
The Antelopes had a service error and attack error on the final two points of the fifth game to allow CBU to earn the hard-fought victory in five games.
Blair Penner had 60 assists for CBU. Daniel Freitas had 13 digs and Penner added 11 for the Lancers, who improved to 12-5 on the season.
Brock Hutchins had a match-high 34 kills for Grand Canyon.
It marked the third consecutive match in which Grand Canyon has lost to a top-ranked team. The Antelopes lost to NCAA No. 1 Pepperdine on Wednesday and then lost both of their weekend matches to the NAIA No. 1 Lancers.
CBU next plays on Friday in a 7 p.m. home match against Lewis (Ill.).
