RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Mohamed Khattab set a season high for kills Friday night to lead No. 1 California Baptist University over No. 8-ranked Johnson & Wales University.
The Lancers defeated JWU 3-1 (30-27, 30-32, 30-22, 30-25) in the second of two matches on the day. CBU also defeated Holy Names University 3-0 (30-18, 30-18, 30-23)
After dropping the first set JWU looked ready to fold in the second when CBU took a 29-28 lead, but fought back to take the set 32-30. Down most of the set CBU battled back to bring the set match point, but couldn't put the wildcats away.
The Lancers had too much firepower for JWU from there on out as CBU took the next two sets. Khattab had 10 kills in the final two sets including seven in the final set. Bryce Easter also had 10 kills in the final two sets and 14 overall in the match. Blair Penner chipped in four service aces to help take out JWU.
The first match of the day did not have the same drama that the second did, as CBU cruised to a straight sets victory over Holy Names.
The Hawks attempted to make it close in the final set when a kill by James Holway brought HNU to within only two, but the Lancers rattled off five straight points to take the final set 30-23. Bryce Easter finished the set with a kill to give him 11 on the match. Overall for the day Easter led all players with 25 kills.
The two wins bring CBU to 16-8 on the season, ending a two match losing skid. Next up for the Lancers is two matches with another top 10 NAIA foe, No. 3-ranked Cardinal Stritch University on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
