CARDINAL LOSS
3/21/2010 5:00:00 AM | Men's Volleyball
PALO ALTO, Calif. --- No. 1 California Baptist University was unable to pull off another epic upset Saturday night as the Lancers lost in straight sets to NCAA Division I No. 1 Stanford.
For the Cardinal, it was their first match since taking the top spot in NCAA DI and they showed they deserved it by dominating the NAIA's top team. Stanford won 30-21, 30-26, 30-22.
CBU came into Burnham Pavilion looking to recreate some of the magic that led the team to a straight set victory last season when Stanford was ranked sixth in the nation. The Lancers already have upset victories over No. 8 UCLA and No. 4 Pepperdine this season.
The Lancers came back from a six point deficit in the second set to tie it at 19-19 on a service error by Stanford's Evan Romero. From there though, the Lancers were outscored 11-7 to drop the set.
The only other time the CBU made the match close was in the first set when a kill by Mohamed Khattab followed by an attack error for the Cardinal tied the score at 10-10. Much like the second set Stanford then pulled away to win the set easily.
Levi Cabral led the Lancers with 10 kills while Brad Lawson led Stanford with 13.
CBU falls to 14-8 and Stanford improves to 13-4.
