RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- It was only fitting that on senior night a senior would lead No. 1 California Baptist University to a straight sets victory over No. 2 Hope International University (30-21, 30-25, 31-29).
Senior Bryce Easter led the Lancers with 13 kills and nine digs as a raucous crowd saw the final home match of the season for the Lancers. Seniors Easter, Adiel Tiedjop and Micah Tokuda were honored before the game and all three contributed to the victory.
Tiedjop had eight kills and six digs and Tokuda added five digs.
“Senior nights can always be emotional for a team, but our guys don't get affected by it. These guys are all business,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “It was great to see our seniors go out on a win. I'm very happy for them and our team as a whole.”
With the two top teams in the NAIA matching up most expected a higher degree of drama, but the only real tense moments came in the final set.
There were 12 tie scores and four lead changes in a final set where the Lancers battled back from set point to win the set and the match.
The Royals took the lead 29-28 on an attack error by Levi Cabral, but Easter promptly fired a kill to tie the match and then got assisted on a block with Ricky Brazee to put CBU up 30-29. An attack error on the Royals would end the match.
“The guys are playing great volleyball right now,” said McGuyre. “Even though the team is not fully healthy we have been playing some of our best volleyball lately and that is good to see with the National Tournament coming up.”
Garet Kreutziger also came up big against the Royals ripping six kills on six attempts, several of which came at crucial moments in the second and third set when Hope looked to have the momentum swinging their way.
The NAIA National Invitational will be held April 22-24, in Davenport, Iowa and the Lancers look ready, winning their last five matches. Four of the five wins have been by way of straight sets. The last two opponents faced by the Lancers have been the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the NAIA and CBU did not drop a set to either.
The Lancers are now 19-8 overall, 10-1 against NAIA opponents. Hope falls to 12-9. CBU finishes the season with two games in Provo, Utah against NCAA Division I No. 3-ranked BYU and one game at UC San Diego before heading to Iowa for the National Tournament.
