PROVO, Utah --- For the first time in five matches No. 1 California Baptist University ran into someone hotter than it falling in straight sets to NCAA Division I No. 2-ranked BYU on Friday night (30-17, 33-31, 30-26).
The Lancers had been on a five match winning streak coming into Friday, but the Cougars boasted an eight match winning streak of their own and had the firepower to continue it.
BYU hit a staggering .410 for the match, including .538 in the first set when it looked poised to bury the Lancers early.
After losing the first set by 13, CBU fought back in the second to push the Cougars past 30 points but ultimately fell short. The Lancers took the lead, 31-30, late in the second, but a service error and two attacking errors gave BYU the set.
Mohamed Khattab led the Lancers with 12 kills. Adiel Tiedjop was the only other Lancer with a double digit kill total ripping 10 on the night.
CBU hit .181 for the match scoring only 41 kills on 94 attempts. It was the Lancers' fifth lowest hitting percentage of the season.
CBU falls to 19-9 while BYU moves to 19-7. The Lancers and Cougars face each other again Saturday night in Provo.
