PROVO, Utah --- No. 1 California Baptist University couldn't figure out the NCAA Division I No. 2 BYU Cougars for the second straight night, falling in straight sets, 33-31, 30-23 and 30-27.
The Cougars beat the Lancers with their depth, having seven players attacking at .300 or better.
The Lancers and Cougars had the same amount of errors and blocks on the night, but the difference was in the teams' efficiency. Even though CBU hit better than their .181 attacking percentage from Friday night, improving to .240 on Saturday, it was not enough as BYU hit .366.
CBU came out firing in the first set jumping out to a 6-3 lead. BYU would battle back to tie the set at 9-9. The set would stay close all the way to the end, featuring three lead changes and 15 ties. Adiel Tiedjop fought to keep the Lancers in it, tying the score at 30-30 and 31-31 with kills, but eventually an attack error and service error sunk CBU.
Neither of the next two sets would be as close.
Adiel Tiedjop led the Lancers with 13 kills and Mike MacNeil had his second highest dig total of the season with 11.
It is only the Lancers second two game losing streak of the season. Six of the team's 10 losses, however, have come by way of straight sets.
CBU falls to 19-10 while BYU improves to 20-7. CBU finishes the regular season Wednesday at UC San Diego.
