SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Tim Wardell pounced on his own rebound with 33 seconds left and scored the game-winning goal to lift California Baptist University to a stunning 2-1 win at NCAA Division I No. 28-ranked Sacramento State Saturday afternoon.
The win over the Hornets, who participated in last year's NCAA Tournament and were picked to finish second in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation this year, moves the Lancers to 2-0 on the young season.
"We worked hard today and took the next step forward in our progression as a program," said CBU Head Coach Ryan Jorden. "Last year, we tie a game like this, but the guys have taken pride in working hard for a result. They believe that we can play with anybody, and they stepped up to the challenge today against a very good Division I team."
The Lancers out-shot the Hornets, 16-12, including a 10-5 margin in the second half, and they had six corner kicks, five in the second half. Sacramento State had one corner kick.
With overtime looming, Wardell broke free from the Hornet defense after being played a ball from Marc Hope. His initial shot was blocked, but the rebound came right back to him and the senior, who entered as a substitute in the 76th minute, made the most of it easily slipping it into the net for the game-winner.
"We talked with Tim before the game about the role we wanted him to play," said Jorden. "He played it brilliantly, and showed great senior leadership by being willing to accept it and work within it."
Sacramento State seized an early opportunity putting the Lancers in a 1-0 hole. On a counter attack after a poor free kick from the Lancers, David Norton weaved his way through the Lancer defense and put the Hornets on the board in just the seventh minute.
But the Lancers responded.
After coming off the bench with a goal and an assist in Tuesday's season-opener, Osvaldo Bastida was inserted into the first 11 today. In the 40th minute, he equalized. As Bastida slipped behind the Hornet defense, Tyler Garrison played him a ball. Bastida corraled the ball and found the back of the net.
"Ozzie was terrific today," said Jorden. "His goal was a fitting reward for his hard work."
