AMHERST, N.Y. --- On paper No. 3 California Baptist University's season opening 3-0 (25-10, 25-23, 25-18) victory over Sioux Falls at the Niagara Falls Splash Tournament looks like the team burst from the starting gates to kick off the 2010 season.
The Lancers, however, rode their defense through a tough offensive opener to go 1-0 on the young season. CBU hit just .184 for the match, but used 43 digs and eight blocks to hold the Cougars to a .098 hitting percentage and an 0-1 start to the season.
“Our defense is definitely ahead of our offense at this point,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “We blocked and defended well but were not effective on the attack. We got the win though and can build on that.”
Libero Katie Lockard led the way for the Lancers with 12 digs, making life difficult all match for the Sioux Falls attackers. Sophomore, and returning All-American, Ingrid Carmona led CBU offensively ripping 12 kills as the only Lancer with a double digit kill total. First-year players Linjun Ji and Jelena Dragovic were the most effective attackers for CBU, recording five and eight kills respectively. Ji had a .455 hitting percentage and recorded five digs and a block, while Dragovic hit .429 with four digs and two blocks.
The Lancers looked as though they would cruise past the Cougars without breaking a sweat winning the first set by a hefty 15 points (25-10). Their sluggish offense caught up with the team in the second as CBU barely squeaked out a 25-23 win, before taking the match 25-18 in the third.
“Offense is all about rhythm, timing, and tempo in this game,” said McGuyre. “Those are things that I believe will come for us as we progress, but we have to work at it. We know what we need to work on now and have a full day of matches tomorrow to do so.”
CBU brings a young squad into the season with only one senior and three juniors on the roster as opposed to nine underclassmen.
The Lancers have a three match slate tomorrow facing Texas Wesleyan at 6 a.m., then Houghton (N.Y.) at 8 a.m., before finishing up against tournament host Daemen (N.Y.) at 12 p.m.
