RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University finished the week in style Friday, getting its second win of the day without dropping a set against Grand Canyon.
The Lancers earned the 3-0 win (25-21, 25-22, 25-15) after defeating Springfield 3-0 earlier in the day.
“We had a good day today,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “I thought we closed the match out well and sustained our energy throughout.”
Like their earlier match, CBU had to battle through a difficult second game on its way to the comfortable three-set win. The Lancers fell behind 14-12 and quickly proceeded to go on a 7-1 run to take a 19-15 lead.
Joseph Fitzpatrick served an ace and Mike MacNeill followed with an emphatic kill to force a Lope timeout. MacNeill would record another kill after the timeout and Blair Penner served an ace to put CBU up 18-15. A GCU error capped the run.
CBU won the third set with ease, running the Lopes out of the gym 25-15. Levi Cabral finished the match in style, gliding in from the center of the court to rip a kill for the win.
Sebastian Steigmeier had another big match for CBU, ripping 15 kills to lead all players. Steigmeier was the only player in the match with double digit kills. Fitzpatrick hit .545 for the match on six kills. Fitzpatrick and Steigmeier also served two aces and Penner served three.
CBU hit above .300 for the second straight match, at .314. Grand Canyon hit just .083 on the night.
“Our serves opened up the door to play good defense and we were able to really limit them offensively,” said McGuyre. “Holding a team under 10 percent on the attack is a significant stat and our serving made that possible.”
CBU evens their record at 3-3 and will have a chance to move above .500 tomorrow at 1 p.m. as the Lancers once again face Springfield.
Grand Canyon falls to 1-5 a day after losing to Hope International.
