SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- California Baptist University is glad to be done with the Robertson Gym and Thunderdome in Santa Barbara, Calif. after going 0-3 at the Gaucho Collegiate Invitational hosted by UC Santa Barbara.
After dropping their first two matches to BYU and then UC Irvine in the Thunderdome, the Lancers hoped the Robertson Gym would be kinder Saturday, but instead found UC San Diego to be too tough, losing 3-1 (16-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-15) to the Tritons.
“It has been disappointing, but we just have to take it in stride and move on,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “I still believe in this team and know we can do great things this season. This was some of the best competition in the country at this tournament.”
CBU won the first set convincingly, Saturday, but proceeded to drop the next three, the second a fourth by nearly 10 points each.
The Lancers mounted their best challenge, after that first set win, in the third game.
CBU was down by as much as six points in the third but battled back at the end, tying the set at 21-21. The Tritons, however made a three-point run to bury the Lancers.
CBU started the match hitting .409 in the first set, but hit progressively worse each set to finish with a dismal .206 attacking percentage.
UCSD was led by Shane Veiga, who had 15 kills and a .367 attack percentage. The Tritons hit .320 as a team for the match.
Levi Cabral and Sebastian Steigmeier had 11 kills each for CBU.
CBU will face Springfield at home Thursday and then host both Springfield and Grand Canyon on Friday. The Lancers are now 1-3, while UCSD moves to 1-2 on the season.
