AZUSA, Calif. --- Ashlee Cervantes and Chase Williams both ran NAIA "A" qualifying times in the 1,000 meters at the Azusa Pacific Indoor All Comers Meet Saturday, punching their tickets to the 2011 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships.
Cervantes ran a school-record qualifying time of 2:59.91, coming in well under the qualifying standard of 3:01.40, and posting the 15th best qualifying time in the country so far. She broke the previous school record of 3:00.38 set by Lorita Leonhardt at the 2001 NAIA Indoor National Championships.
Williams ran a 2:31.29, just over half a second under the qualifying standard of 2:31.90. That is currently the 16th fastest qualifying time in the country.
"We've had some really good workouts, and the fact that Ashlee and Chase both hit qualifiers was not a surprise," said CBU Head Coach Wade Watkins. "We were hoping to get a few more on the list of national qualifiers, and we have one week of qualifying left to do so."
Cervantes joins the women's 4x800 relay team as national qualifiers. She will anchor that team at the national championships. So far, Williams is the only Lancer from the men's side to earn a berth to the national championships.
The Lancers return to Azusa Pacific next Saturday, participating in the last-chance qualifying meet, which is set to begin at 9:40 a.m.
The NAIA Indoor National Championships are March 3-5, in Geneva, Ohio.
