SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- No. 7 California Baptist University got a must win victory Saturday at The Master's, defeating the Mustangs 72-62 to keep pace in the GSAC standings.
CBU moved to 21-7 overall and pushed its conference record to 14-4 to stay tied for second with Biola, who defeated Concordia tonight. CBU has defeated Biola twice this season to hold the tie-breaker between the teams, with just two regular season games remaining.
CBU never trailed in the contest and got big minutes out of Chynna Burwell off the bench, after starters Dana Olsen and S.J. Simmons fouled out. Burwell had 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting and led all players with nine rebounds.
Mid-way through the opening half, CBU went on a 10-0 run to go up by 11 points. The Lancers got four free throws from Olsen during the run and big baskets from Simmons and Burwell off Mustang turnovers.
CBU led by as much as 14 in the first half, but The Master's cut the deficit to 31-25 at the break.
Out of the break the Mustangs cut the Lancer lead to just three with a 3-pointer. Simmons pushed the CBU advantage to 11 again, however, hitting a three with 15:42 left to play.
Late in the game The Master's went on an 11-4 run to cut the deficit to four points at 65-61. CBU hit 7-of-8 free throws from there on out, and allowed only one point in the final two minutes to seal the win.
Olsen, who left at the 2:13 mark with her fifth foul, led all players with 21 points, getting her first 12 from the foul line. V.V. Vasciunaite scored 18 to join Burwell and Olsen as the only Lancers in double-figures.
CBU was cold from beyond the arc, hitting just 3-of-15 long balls on the game, but hit 86.8 percent of its free throws. CBU also out-rebounded the Mustangs 48-31.
The Master's was led by Erica Inge with 20 points and Zoe Scott with 18.
CBU faces Concordia on the road Tuesday, before finishing the regular season at home against Fresno Pacific at home.
