SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --- No. 1 California Baptist University finished off a perfect sweep of the Volleyball Hall of Fame Classic, with a 3-0 victory over NCAA Division I No. 15 University of the Pacific.
The Lancers had to battle through a close second set en route to the straight set (25-18, 27-25, 25-14) win.
“I am extremely pleased with the way the guys played,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “I'm proud of the way the guys conducted themselves out here. It was a phenomenal performance all the way around.”
CBU jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set and held the advantage nearly the entire set until Pacific evened the game at 24-24.
Facing a two-set deficit, the Tigers used a four-point run to even the game. The two teams traded points, before a Pacific error again gave the Lancers the edge and Levi Cabral finished the set off with a kill.
“We had outstanding individual performances all around today,” said McGuyre. “Hitting .387 against a ranked Division I team is a good accomplishment.”
The Lancers were led by Cabral who ripped 15 kills and hit .444. Sebastien Steigmeier had 12 kills and hit .435 and Blair Penner recorded 31 assists.
As a team CBU posted 12.5 total blocks, led by Ricky Brazee with six blocking assists. Penner also had four blocking assists and one solo block.
The Tigers hit just .076, getting 29 kills and 23 errors on 79 attempts.
The Lancers were also successful in the tournament awards department, with Cabral getting tournament MVP and Penner and Steigmeier being named to the All-Tournament team.
CBU also swept the skills contests at the classic. Mike MacNeill won the serve competition and in a surprising turn Daniel Freitas, the Lancers libero, won the bounce competition as the hardest hitter in the gym.
The two match sweep gives CBU a 10-3 record on the season, running its win streak to nine matches. Pacific falls to 5-6.
