SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- Naomi Van Setten won the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the second consecutive meet, leading California Baptist University at the Mangrum Invitational hosted Cal State San Marcos Saturday.
Van Setten, who has only run the event twice in her career, ran an 11:38.3, falling just three seconds shy of earning a "B" qualifier for the national championships.
"Naomi is quickly learning how to navigate the 30 inch barrier 28 times and another seven times with the 12-foot long water jump all while covering 3,000 meters," said CBU Head Coach Wade Watkins. "I'm looking forward to her getting in a race against some top level competition to see what she can do. She is improving every day."
Meanwhile, Chase Williams lowered his time in the 800, winning his section and posting the top overall time against 32 competitors, running a 1:53.71. He won his section by nearly three full seconds, leading wire-to-wire.
"The pace setter was supposed to bring the field through in 56 seconds, but Chase opted for a faster pace, and he opened up a good lead," said Watkins. "He ran a good race and held the field off down the stretch. He is progressing well, working on all aspects of his race."
The majority of the Lancers ran in races they normally don't compete in. Javier Madrid ran his first steeplechase and finished third with a 9:54.
The Lancers return to the track April 9 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
