MALIBU, Calif. --- California Baptist University took on the Waves of Pepperdine Wednesday night, as they fell in five sets.
CBU lost (22-25, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21, 15-10), this was just the second time this season the Lancers pushed it to five sets.
Kristopher Johnson led the Lancers with 18 kills. He finished the match hitting .552, along with four blocks and only two attacking errors. Aaron McCalmont tallied 17 kills hitting .200, as well as seven digs and six blocks.
Maurice Torres led the Waves with 26 kills hitting .465, along with 12 digs and six blocks on the match.
In the opening set, the Lancers hit .219 with 13 kills on 32 attempts, while the Waves hit .265 with 15 kills on 34 attempts. The Lancers took the lead at 14-13, but didn't establish a dominant lead until 18-17 off a McCalmont service ace.
The lead changed hands five times and was tied a total of six times.
The second set was a completely different story for the Lancers, as the Waves hit a blistering .667. The Lancers managed a percentage of .292, but being down by as much as nine throughout the set, the Lancers never could catch back up.
The Lancers turned it around in the third game, as they started off with a 4-0 run. The Lancers hit their best on the match .400 with 11 kills on 20 attempts. The score never changed hands or was tied and the Lancers led by as much as seven throughout the match.
In the fourth and fifth set the Waves hit over .300, as the Lancers hit under .150. The fourth set was very competitive and the lead changed hands three times and was tied four times. The Lancers combined a total of 17 kills in both sets, as the Waves combined for 24 kills.
The Lancers move to 3-10 on the season.
CBU will continue the road trip, as they will face BYU on Feb. 17-18.
