FRESNO, Calif. -- All season long, California Baptist University has relied on its offense, but when it went cold in its season finale at Fresno Pacific, the Lancers still found a way to win and end 2014 on a high note.
CBU completed the season sweep of the PacWest rival Sunbirds in four sets Friday night, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-17. Senior outside hitter Michelle Waber closed out her collegiate career with a double-double on 17 kills, 16 digs and even got the final kill of the season, ending her collegiate career on a positive, for the Lancers. The Lancers end the 2014 regular season with a 16-12 overall, 12-8 in PacWest record. Fresno slipped to 20-8, 14-5.
The Lancers hit at just a .098 percentage but counteracted their offensive troubles with a great defensive night, holding FPU to a .070 percentage on the attack. Becky Moodie had a staggering 28 digs for CBU, which also received 15 from Tori Hinderaker and 11 from Jordan Carter, who also finished with a double-double with 35 assists. Jessica Harris was a dual threat, as well, for the Lancers with seven blocks and seven kills on a match-high .385 attack percentage.
CBU had to overcome a first-set loss Friday, as FPU used a 6-2 run to take a 22-19 edge in the opener. The Lancers pulled back within a point, 23-22, on kills from Waber and Lauren Hackett (seven kills) but the Sunbirds got consecutive kills off their own to end the set, 25-22.
Fresno Pacific came out strong in the second set, too, taking an early 10-7 advantage. The Sunbirds worked their advantage to five, 20-15, and threatened to take a two-set cushion on the Lancers before the visitors made their push. CBU tied things at 21-21 with a 6-1 run, but it seemed FPU broke the momentum with consecutive points. The Lancers shrugged it off, thanks to a kill each from Hackett and Waber to knot the score at 23-23 before consecutive errors from the home team evened the match at a set apiece.
In the swing set, CBU took an early lead but saw the Sunbirds come back and took a 14-12 lead at about halfway through the third frame. The Lancers turned things around from there and used a 9-1 run fueled by two kills from Hackett and one each from Waber and Harris to take a commanding 21-15 advantage. It appeared the Sunbirds had a comeback brewing, as they scored the next eight points to take a big 23-21 lead. CBU made two substitutions from there, bringing in Kristin McCord and Lauren Marr, and it paid off. The Lancers tied things on consecutive FPU errors and an ace from McCord delivered another come-from-behind victory for the visitors, 25-23.
The Lancers ran away with the fourth set, using a 7-0 spurt -- highlighted by kills from Hackett and Lauren Marr -- to take a 12-6 lead in the early going. Another 5-0 run -- marked by a Harris kill and Carter ace -- let CBU build its lead up to 20-13, which set up the match-clinching kill from Waber.
