CBU Moves Forward In MPSF
1/20/2015 11:57:00 AM | Men's Volleyball
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Three matches await California Baptist University this week, as it faces third-ranked UC Irvine in a road-home series Wednesday and Saturday that sandwiches a home match with UC San Diego on Friday. The Lancers visit the Anteaters on Tuesday before hosting them on Saturday, with all matches scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time.
As always, CBU has been faced with a tough schedule in the powerful MPSF. Four of its first six matches are against top-15 ranked teams in NCAA Division I-II this season. UC Irvine got bumped all the way up to No. 3 in the NCAA in Monday's AVCA poll, which puts the Lancers against the second and third-ranked teams in the nation in consecutive weeks.
CBU will look to fill the upset role on Tuesday and Saturday after taking 12th-ranked Stanford to five sets Saturday in a 25-16, 15-25, 28-30, 25-15, 15-11 home loss. Despite the defeat, the Lancers managed to rack up more kills (54-47), out dig (36-33) and out block (15-13) in the loss. The Lancers will also look to extend their all-time series lead over the Tritons with a home win on Friday.
SERIES NOTES (UC IRVINE)
UC Irvine has won the last three matches in its series with CBU and holds a 13-3 advantage overall. The Anteaters enjoyed a series-best, five-match winning streak from 2006 to 2010 before the Lancers snapped it in 2011. CBU last defeated UCI on January 16, 2013, in five sets at home. In addition, the Lancers also logged a victory over UC Irvine in 2005.
SERIES NOTES (UC SAN DIEGO)
CBU has an 18-8 edge in its series with UC San Diego, with the Lancers playing the Tritons more than anyone else in the MPSF. UCSD won the last meeting between the two in its own building, as the season matchup was split with each home team proving victorious and each match going the full five sets. The Lancers will attempt to win their third match in four tries over the Tritons this week.
IN THE TOP PERCENT
From setter to outside hitter and middle blocker, there are freshmen all over the court making an impact for the Lancers this season. Maybe none has been more impressive than middle blocker Enrique de Diego Garcia. The Guadalajara, Spain native has been a picture of efficiency so far with 36 kills and just four errors on 54 attempts. That's been good for a .596 attack percentage this season, which is the best among Lancers with at least 10 kills this season. He also leads the team in blocks with 18 (16 assists, two solo) on the year.
HISTORIC PERFORMANCE
Winning two of its first three matches, California Baptist University has got off to a great start in 2015, including a sweep of UC Merced, 25-13, 25-17, 25-17, Saturday. The Lancers dispatched the Bobcats in historic fashion, attacking at a .627 percentage (36 kills, four errors in 51 attempts). That hitting percentage ranks second in CBU history -- behind a .662 mark set against Clarke in 2011 -- and fourth in the MPSF since the rally-scoring era began in 2001. The Lancers also had 16 aces against UC Merced, which tied a program high and is two off the MPSF's all-time record. Jonathan Tuttle and Roy Powell are tied with three other players in the conference for most aces in a match, as each had five against UC Merced.
UC IRVINE AT A GLANCE
UC Irvine got a big boost in the AVCA's NCAA Division I-II rankings Monday, as it shot up to No. 3 in the top-15 with its 5-1 record. Tamir Hershko and Michael Saeta have been big for the Anteaters this year. Saeta has 228 assists (11.40 a set) in 2015 and also leads the team with 13 service aces and ranks second in digs (30, 1.50 a set) and fourth in blocks (11). Hershko has a team-high 84 kills (4.20 a set) on a .421 percentage. He also averages 1.25 digs and a .40 blocks a set. UCI is hitting at an effective .357 clip (274-92-510) and holding its opponents to a .239 mark, with Michael Brinkley (41) leading the team in digs. Jason Agopian averages a block a set with 20 on the season, while Zack La Cavera and Andrew Benz have 17 and 16 blocks, respectively.
UC SAN DIEGO AT A GLANCE
UCSD has started the season at 1-3, 0-2 in the MPSF with its lone victory coming against Grand Canyon. The Tritons are coming off 3-0 losses to Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge to open their conference season. UC San Diego runs a balanced offense, with five players logging more than 20 kills, and Tanner Syftestad leading that group with 41 kills. Shayne Beamer has a team-high hitting percentage of .333 (32-10-65).
