OAKLAND, Calif. – After impressing its home fans in its season opener, it was time for California Baptist University to take its show on the road. It managed to upstage Holy Names' season opener, as the Lancers swept the Hawks, 25-16, 25-14, 25-9.
CBU improved to 1-1 on the year after nearly taking Ohio State to five sets on Tuesday. HNU starts the season at 0-1.
Things were clicking for CBU on both the offensive and defensive ends, attacking at a .426 percentage (36 kills, 10 errors on 61 attempts) and holding HNU to a -.072 mark (15 kills, 20 errors and 69 attempts).
Freshmen Enrique de Diego Garcia and Zachary Melcher were huge contributors once again for the Lancers. Garcia continued his hot hitting with a match-high nine kills coming without an error on a .900 hitting percentage and accompanying three blocks. Melcher had 32 assists, four digs, two blocks and two kills on as many attempts. Rocky DeLyon had eight kills, four aces, three digs and a block, while Jonathan Tuttle finished seven kills for CBU.
The Lancers took an early lead, 8-6, in the first set and then used a 7-3 run, highlighted by kills from Garcia, Tuttle and DeLyon, to reach a level of comfort with a 15-9 edge. A 6-2 run marked by two kills from Paul Rohit gave CBU a 21-13 cushion. Caleb Miller and DeLyon scored the final two points of the set with kills.
In the second set, the Lancers took an early advantage and turned a three-point edge into a 21-12 cushion with an 8-2 run. DeLyon had two kills in that span, while Garcia had a kill and ace as CBU powered through the set.
A 6-1 run to open the third put CBU on the right track for the sweep it was looking for. Still up by five at 10-5, a massive 13-3 run – marked by two Roy Powell aces and two kills from Philip Schick – all but secured the victory for the Lancers, who sat up 23-8. Jackson Burge came up with the match-ending point with a kill.
The Lancers will be back in action Saturday at UC Merced at 7:00 p.m. to conclude its first road trip. CBU returns home on Jan. 14 to open Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action against Pepperdine at 7:00 p.m.
