SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Comebacks have been key for California Baptist University this season. After leading the PacWest for the majority of the season, the Lancers need another comeback as they look to claim their first-ever conference championship in the PacWest.
Â
Despite a strong battle, CBU was unable to overcome Point Loma on the road in a four-set loss (25-14, 29-31, 32-30, 25-21) Saturday night in Golden Gymnasium. Paired with a five-set Dixie State win at Concordia (20-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-8), the Lancers find themselves out of first place for the first time in seven matches with a 17-5, 10-4 in conference record.
Â
PLNU improves to 15-8, 9-5 and the Red Storm to 14-8, 11-3. It makes the Lancers' match in St. George, Utah on Wednesday 8 p.m. one to give CBU a share of first place again.
Â
Jenna Perry put together a huge night for the Lancers, with 25 kills on a .373 percentage (25-6-51). Lauren Hackett contributed 17 kills and nine digs. Jordyn Siko ended up with 44 assists, nine digs, five kills and four blocks. Kristin McCord led the team with 11 digs and Tori Ortman added nine
Â
After a 25-14 loss in the opener, CBU was in desperate need of some momentum. The Lancers got just that when they came out on top of a huge win in a marathon second set, 31-29. It was the team's longest set in over a year.
Â
The Lancers were forced to call timeout late in the second, down 22-20, and found themselves facing a set point, 24-22, that if lost would have given the Sea Lions a stranglehold on the match. Consecutive kills from Lauren Marr and Siko gave CBU new life, with the set tied at 24.
Â
Then came a back-and-forth of set points, with CBU and PLNU each on the cusp of victory five and two times in the set, respectively. Down 26-25, a combo block from Siko and Abbie Gortsema kept the Lancers going before they delivered on their fifth shot at the win.
Â
Perry had a hand in the Lancers' final three points, giving them 29-28 and 30-29 leads with kills. She teamed up with Gortsema (seven blocks, four kills) for the clinching point on a block.
Â
It was a similar story – just a point longer – in set three, just one that went the other way. Forces outside of CBU's control played a part in two crucial points in set three, helping Point Loma grab a 32-30 win.
Â
The Lancers should be credited for even forcing extra points, as it faced set point at 24-21. Three-straight Point Loma errors let CBU back in, and both teams struggled to find a winner. The Lancers dodged set point three times before the Sea Lions finished up on a 2-0 run.
Â
In the final set, the Lancers took an 18-16 lead on consecutive kills from Hackett and Siko. The Sea Lions answered back with a match-clinching 9-3 run.Â
