RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Even though it was two days ago, California Baptist University carried over the momentum it had built up in its third set against Hawaii on Wednesday into its rematch with the Warriors on Friday.
A short-handed Lancer team gave sixth-ranked Hawaii its best shot, but came up short in three sets, 26-24, 25-16, 25-23, in the Van Dyne Gym. Despite nearly matching the Warriors point for point in the first and last sets, CBU fell to 3-11, 1-10 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while Hawaii improved to 9-3, 6-2.
Roy Powell had a team-high nine kills, along with two aces and two blocks for CBU, which also received a team-high seven blocks from Caleb Miller. Powell and Cody Jackson tied for a team-best .300 hitting percentage, with Jackson slamming down five kills in 10 attempts. Jonathan Tuttle had a team-high six digs and four kills, while Giovanni Llinas Rosa had five digs and four kills.
There were a total of 28 ties and nine changes in the match, with most of those coming in the opening game (19 and six, respectively). CBU took a 17-16 lead but three-straight kills from Taylor Averill gave Hawaii a 19-17 edge.
An Enrique de Diego Garcia kill followed by an attack error tied things back up at 19-19. The score was evened again at 20, 21 and 22, but the Lancers prompted a timeout when they took a 23-22 advantage.
The Warriors rallied back to hold set point, 24-23, but another attacking error knotted things at 24 points. A kill from Brooke Sedore helped Hawaii walk away with the opener in the end, though.
There were nine ties and three lead changes early in the second set, as CBU never let up. Tied at 11, the Warriors were gifted with an 8-2 run that turned things around in their favor.
The two-set deficit did not faze the Lancers, even when they found themselves down 10-5 in the third. Jackson capped a 4-0 CBU run with a kill that put it within a point, 10-9. The home team kept up the momentum, with two Powell spikes, one from Garcia and another from Jackson, fueling a mini 5-3 spurt that tied things at 14-14.
Hawaii recovered to take an 18-14 lead, but Jackson started another 3-0 Lancer run with a kill to bring his team back within a point. Try as they might, the Warriors could not pull away as another Jackson kill kept CBU within 22-21. Consecutive Hawaii errors had the Lancers thinking comeback, with a 23-23 tie, but Sedore came up with another back-breaking kill to help the Warriors leave Van Dyne with the victory.
CBU now hits the road for two matches, traveling to #11 UCLA Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match that will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network. The Lancers will then swing over to UC Santa Barbara next Friday to conclude a short trip.
