Conference Break
2/24/2015 9:58:00 AM | Men's Volleyball
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- The ever-grueling MPSF schedule is on pause for California Baptist University this week, as it hosts two non-conference opponents (Holy Names and UC Merced) for the second time. The Lancers had a tremendous amount of success against both teams on the road early in the season, and will look to build up a full head of steam for the latter half of their season.
This week marks the first time in 10 matches CBU has not faced a team in the NCAA Division I-II in the top-15 or receiving votes in the poll.
Injuries have required the Lancers to use four different starting lineups in their last four matches. An average of 10.25 players have competed in each match over that span. Enrique de Diego Garcia and Zachary Melcher are the two CBU players who have started every match this year. Garcia is within reach of two single-season records for the Lancers. His 1.31 blocks per set ranks second all time, with the record sitting at 1.54 from 2004. His .400 hitting percentage is ninth all time off a .486 mark set in 2006.
SERIES NOTES (HOLY NAMES)
While these two are common foes in California Baptist University's PacWest programs, the Lancers and Hawks have not faced each other since 2010 until this season. CBU has won all six matches with Holy Names in a series that began back in 2006. The Lancers swept their first match with the Hawks this season, 25-16, 25-14, 25-9, hitting at a .426 percentage, led by Enrique de Diego Garcia's .900 attack rate (nine kills, no errors on 10 attempts).
SERIES NOTES (UC MERCED)
January 10th's match between these two teams was the first time both had faced each other, as UC Merced of the NAIA is in its second season offering men's volleyball. The Lancers swept the Bobcats on the road on set scores of 25-13, 25-17, 25-17 and made a lot of history in the process. Roy Powell and Jonathan Tuttle each had five service aces in the match to help CBU set a new single-match record for aces in a match (16).
RECORD REPEAT?
Records were set last time California Baptist University and UC Merced met in the third match of the Lancers' season. CBU compiled 16 service aces to set a new program single-match record. The Lancers also attacked at .627 percentage, with 36 kills and four errors on 51 attempts. It stands as the second-best performance in a match in the history of the program. It only trails behind a .662 mark set against Clarke in 2011, while ranking fourth in the MPSF since the rally-scoring era began in 2001. Jonathan Tuttle had a team-high nine kills on a .636 mark (nine kills, two errors on 11 attempts). Rocky DeLyon also had seven kills on 10 swings. CBU's hitting percentage and aces that night still stand as single-match records this season in the MPSF at large.
HOLY NAMES AT A GLANCE
After playing just three matches in about the first month-and-a-half of the season, the Hawks are playing their fourth match in six days tonight. Holy Names is the only NCAA Division II team on the west coast. Its lone victory came in four sets at UC Merced, but it also visits UC San Diego this week. Practically all of the Hawks' offense comes from the outside, with outside hitters Blake Jansen and Kyle Cazares tied for the team-lead in kills with 40.
UC MERCED AT A GLANCE
With a 2-11 record, the Bobcats broke a seven-match losing streak at Holy Names Saturday. Its other victory came against Bluefield College on January 17th. Cole Smith leads the Bobcats with 113 kills on the year, which also ranks him 22nd in the NAIA in kills per set (2.97). Scott Livesay is the team's setter and has 171 assists on the year, ranking 21st in assists per game (5.70) in the NAIA. Ben Nilsen is UC Merced's top digger with 86 on the year, while Daniel Sabzehzar owns a team-high 29 blocks.
