RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Coming off a tough non-conference loss to Lindenwood, California Baptist University is looking to get back to its winning ways in two MPSF road matches this week.
The Lancers had a season-long three match winning streak snapped when the Lions overcame a two-set deficit for a five-set victory Saturday in the Van Dyne Gym. Long Beach State had a three-match streak of its own snapped by 15th-ranked Penn State in its own ASICS Tournament on Saturday. The 49ers had three highlight victories at UC Santa Barbara, UCLA and Harvard before the defeat. Cal State Northridge was also at the ASICS Tournament this past weekend and snapped an eight-match skid against Harvard.
CBU defeated UC San Diego in La Jolla for the first time since 2008 in its last match, 19-25, 25-18, 26-24, 26-24. Zachary Melcher had a career-high 54 assists, which also stands as a season-high for the Lancers, who attacked at a .355 percentage (63-20-121) in the match. Roy Powell tallied a match-high 21 kills at UCSD, along with nine digs, three blocks, three aces and three assists, and then topped himself with 24 against Lindenwood to set a new season high for CBU.

When the two teams last met in Riverside on January 28th, they played a marathon 36-34 first set, with CSUN taking the opener and the match in four. The Matadors won four-straight matches against the Lancers from 2007 to 2012, with breaks coming in 2008 or 2011.
