RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Five players finished with at least six kills for California Baptist University Saturday night. It was not enough to topple seventh-ranked UC Santa Barbara, though, in the Van Dyne Gym, as the Gauchos won in three sets, 25-22, 25-18, 25-20.
Jonathan Tuttle led the Lancers with a match-high 11 kills. Rocky DeLyon followed with eight kills, while Rohit Paul ended up with seven and Caleb Miller and Enrique de Diego Garcia wound up with six each. With the loss, CBU moves to 6-18, 2-16 in the MPSF and UCSB improves to 14-8, 10-8. With the MPSF season coming to a close, the Lancers travel to Stanford and Pepperdine on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Senior Night for CBU will be up right after on April 16th against USC.
Paul also had five digs and two blocks for the Lancers, who also received two blocks from Garcia. Zachary Melcher compiled 31 assists for CBU.
There were eight ties in the first set, with little breathing room available for either side in the early going. An 11-11 tie flipped into a three-point deficit for the Lancers, 16-13. DeLyon helped bring his team back within a point, 17-16. The Gauchos never let CBU closer before grabbing a 25-22 win.
Once again in the second set, the turning point came with things tied at 11-11 after a 5-1 UCSB run. The Gauchos never let CBU back in it, and jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the third. Two kills from Tuttle gave the Lancers new life, as they knotted the score at 10-10 on a 5-1 run. Both sides traded points before the home team worked its way to a 16-15 lead after kills from Paul, DeLyon and Tuttle. A big swinging point came on a 4-0 UC Santa Barbara spurt, as it went on to grab the sweep.
