SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — After a disappointing loss Thursday, California Baptist University came out determined to set the tone Saturday afternoon and get the first goal. While they didn't get the first goal, the Lancers got the last laugh, scoring two goals in the final two minutes to beat Dominican University of California 2-1.
"It feels really, really good to win," said Julian Ekeze, who scored the first of CBU's goals.
With the win, CBU improves to 2-4-1, 1-1 PacWest, while the Penguins drop to 0-7-0, 0-2 in conference.
Right from the whistle to start the game, CBU came out hungry for a goal. Daniel Westholm laid off a ball to put Jeromy Gurule in behind the defense, but the shot was just wide of the frame in the first five minutes of action.
Wyatt Deane kept the tempo on offense, sending a header off a dead ball on frame to force the Penguin goalkeeper to make a save.
DUC tried to break into the Lancers' defensive third of the field, but CBU held firm and sent three attackers on a counter attack. Ekeze put a little too much on his shot, however, sending it over the crossbar to keep it 0-0 with 20 minutes left in the half.
Coming out of the halftime break still scoreless, CBU wanted to strike first, but it was DUC that would find the back of the net first in the 72nd minute.
Fighting until the very end, Ekeze ignited the Lancers with energy and hope by drilling a goal into the upper, right hand pocket to even the score at 1-1 with exactly two minutes left on the clock.
"It definitely lifted us," said Ekeze. "Once we got level, we had confidence and knew we could get a second one."
With renewed energy, the Lancers kept pushing in the final minutes of the game and capitalized once more. Thomas Carter sent a ball into the box, putting Gurule in a breakaway with the goalkeeper where he tucked it away with ease for the game-winner.
"I saw Tommy take a look up and cross it," said Gurule. "It went over their heads, I took a touch, beat the keeper and put it away. It'll be a good bus ride home now."
CBU returns home to host Concordia of Irvine on Thursday, kicking off at 3:00 p.m.
