DAVIS, Calif. – Defense locked in for California Baptist University Saturday and led it to two wins over Concordia and Diablo Valley College to conclude UC Davis' Aggie Shootout.
Joseph Moorman led the defense with 24 saves in both games, as the Lancers knocked off Concordia 14-8 and Diablo Valley College 11-6 and improved to 4-0 in games they held the opposition to 10 goals or less.
Overall, CBU is 4-6 this season, while Concordia and DVC are 2-7 and 7-3, respectively. CBU looks to keep its form in its second Western Water Polo Association game against Fresno Pacific Thursday at 7 p.m.
Brent Teraoka and Nick Candau each had a team-high five goals on the day for CBU, while David Ring had four. Brothers Spencer and Tanner Shore scored in each game, as well.
The Lancers fell into an early hole to start the day against Concordia, but they flipped the script by winning the second quarter, 6-2, to take a 7-3 lead into halftime. Moorman spearheaded the run with six saves in the frame.
Candau opened the second-quarter scoring 40 seconds in, but the Eagles quickly went back up, 3-2. From there, CBU had four players (Teraoka, Ryan Penney, Tanner and Spencer Shore) score four-straight over a four-minute span to jump in front, 6-3. The Lancers kept their three-goal lead, 7-4, when Tucker Angelo rattled one home 14 seconds before halftime.
Angelo started another 4-0 CBU charge to start the second half, with Clint Walling, Ring and Candau adding to it and extending the lead to 10-4.
The Eagles would not come closer than five goals from there, with Ring finding the back of the cage 33 seconds before the third ended on a power play. Walling scored first in the fourth quarter to put the game away, as the Lancers led by seven, 13-6, with just under seven minutes to go.
In the finale with DVC, CBU never trailed but did not pull away until late. The Lancers' Spencer and Candau each scored in the first six minutes of the game for a 2-0 edge.
Diablo Valley tied things momentarily at 2-2 early in the second quarter, but Ring put CBU back in front 49 seconds later. The Lancers would not let go of the lead again, as it sparked a 5-0 run that spanned into the third quarter.
The Vikings cut into the lead, bringing it within 7-5, with 7:06 remaining. A 3-0 response coming on goals from Thomas Henline, Teraoka and Ring gave CBU an insurmountable 10-5 cushion with 4:35 left on the clock.
